Non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs), which are emitted from various sources into the atmosphere, play important roles in controlling air quality because they undergo gas-phase photochemical reactions leading to the formation of ozone and secondary aerosols. Proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) is a technique that allows on-line measurements of NMVOCs at trace levels in air. Using PTR-MS, we are investigating the emission properties of NMVOCs from diesel vehicles3) and biomass burning4) to determine the emission factors of the NMVOCs. In the presentation, we will introduce advantages of PTR-MS and show our recent results regarding field and laboratory measurements of NMVOCs emitted from automotive exhaust and biomass burning.
