Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. has developed a low-resistance microchannel plate (MCP) detector and a microchannel plate-photodiode (MCP-PD) detector for time-of-flight mass spectrometry in order to mitigate or solve the saturation problem of conventional MCP detectors. The low-resistance MCP is expected to recover from saturation faster than normal-resistance MCPs. Results suggest that its recovery time takes less than 1 ms, indicating it is useful for fast-rate (1kHz) measurement. The MCP-PD detector is designed to replace a traditional MCP at the back of the Chevron MCP with a photodiode. Compared to the conventional MCP detector that was easily saturated after a large output charge, the MCP-PD detector did not saturate even after a significant amount (0.8 pC) of output charge was measured.
