Hydroxyl radicals (OH) have high reactivity and play a key role in numerous kinds of oxidative stress. In this study, we developed a direct measurement method of OH radicals in the skin gas by using an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry and investigated effects of vitamin C, E and hydrogen gas as scavengers of OH radicals. Mass spectra of skin gases suggested that OH radicals emanated from the human skin formed aggregations with water clusters. Administration of vitamin C or E, or inhalation of hydrogen gas decreased peak intensities concerned with OH radicals in mass spectra of skin gases. These results also indicated that APCI-MS was available for measuring OH radicals in the human skin gases.
