The olfactory bulb (OB) is the first relay on the olfactory sensory pathway and the target of the neural progenitor cells generated in the subventricular zone (SVZ) lining the lateral ventricles and which migrate along the rostral extension of the SVZ, also called the rostral migratory stream (RMS). Here we generate murine olfactory deprivation model by surgical unilateral nostril closure with a single intraperitoneal administration of Methimazole (MT), a drug for hyperthyroidism with a unique side effect of temporary and reversible olfactory epithelium (OE) depletion. On this model, we have defined proteomic basis of OB-RMS-SVZ axis using high speed MALDI imaging mass spectrometry.
