Recent single crystal X-ray diffractometry showed that alkynyl-protected gold alloy clusters [MAu24(C≡CR)18]2– (M = Pd, Pt; R = 3,5–(CF3)2C6H3) are composed of an icosahedral M@Au12 core and six units of Au2(C≡CR)3 on the surface We observed a sequential desorption of (C≡CR)2 units as a major pathway in collision–induced dissociation (CID) of [MAu24(C≡CR)18]2–. This pathway corresponds to a reductive elimination of homocoupling products of alkynes from [MAu24(C≡CR)18]2–. More efficient desorption of (C≡CR)2 from [PdAu24(C≡CR)18]2– than from [PtAu24(C≡CR)18]2– suggests that Pd–doping of gold clusters reduces the barrier height for the reductive elimination.
