Global-scale Imaging of Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted from Western US Wildfires

Biomass burning in wildfires is a large source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other trace species to the atmosphere. Reactions involving these VOCs produce secondary organic aerosols, which are important air pollutants and radiative forcing agents. NOAA and NASA led the FIREX-AQ project to study emissions of trace gases and aerosols from western US wildfires, in which “global-scale imaging” was performed using airplanes. We measured VOCs in plumes of various wildfires using proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-MS) to examine VOC composition and emission rates, as well as aging chemistry of VOCs primarily emitted from the wildfires.
