Negative Ion Measurement with TG-MS

Evolved gas analysis (EGA) by thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry (TG-MS) is widely used as a method for analyzing the thermophysical properties of materials.
In mass spectrometry, the comparison of mass spectra measured by positive and negative ionization gives important information for material analysis. However, in TG-MS, the measurement of negative ions was difficult due to the ionization principle and structural problems. We have developed a negative ionization technology for TG-MS by combining Penning ionization and electron capture ionization.
TG/DSC-MS system consisted of STA449(NETZSCH) and JMS-Q1500GC(JEOL Ltd.) used for this development was shown in Figure 1. The extracted ion profiles of organic sulfur compound and halogens generated from the electrolyte of solid sulfide battery measured by TG-MS system with negative ionization technique were shown in Figure 2.
