In determining the molecular composition of an unknown compound by GC/MS, it is difficult to accurately determine whether fluorine is contained. The reason is that GC detectors that are selective for fluorine are not common, and another reason is that fluorine has no stable isotopes. The ability to easily determine whether fluorine is present can be very helpful in accurately determining the molecular composition of unknown compounds. In this study, we report a method for distinguishing fluorine-containing compounds from fluorine-free compounds obtained by GC-QTOF analysis of many standard compounds.
