Multiple Ionization and Coulomb Explosion of Molecules in Intense Femtosecond Laser Fields

Intense femtosecond lasers open up new avenue for generating multiply charged molecular cations (MMCs). The fragmentation processes that these high energy species undergo, termed Coulomb explosion, are utilized to determine the static molecular structures as well as to trace the molecular dynamics of ultrafast chemical reactions. This talk covers recent advances made in studies of Coulomb explosion imaging, highlighting the use of this process to determine the static structures of complex molecules, geometric isomers, chiral molecules and molecular complexes. Although Coulomb explosion imaging has widely been utilized, MMCs, which are interesting from both fundamental and applied scientific perspectives, have been little explored to date. Thus, a simple question arises: How small is the smallest organic molecule that can survive after the removal of electrons? Recently, it is revealed that some MMCs stay intact for more than microseconds even after stripping of four or five electrons. This talk also focuses on recent findings of intact organic MMCs.
