Halogenated organic compounds were extracted with dichloromethane from effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The unintentional products were identified by accurate mass analysis using an instrument-equipped software, a chemical structure database and a mass fragment and neutral loss database. Three kinds of chlorinated compounds, monochlorophenol, dichloro-dihydroxybenzene and tetrachloro-BPA, which were possibly generated in the sterilization process of WWTPs. In order to elucidate the chemical behavior of BPA, ClxBPAs, BrxBPAs, and chlorophenol in the sterilization process, their concentrations were determined in influent and effluent of the sterilization plant. Concentrations of BPA, mono- to tri-chloro BPAs, tetrabromo-BPA, and tetrachlorophenol were decreased after the sterilization. On the other hand, the concentration of 3,3’,5,5’-tetrachloro-BPA was increased by the sterilization.
