Recently, due to the development of various soft-ionization methods and highly sensitive and high resolution mass analyzers, mass spectrometry becomes an important technique even in the field of synthetic polymers. In this lecture, current status and future outlook of mass spectrometry for the characterization of synthetic polymers are reviewed with elaborating the end group analysis of radically polymerized poly(methyl methacrylate)s with using MALDI-spiral-TOF-MS, ESI-MS, pyrolysis-GC-MS and evolved gas-MS.
