Imaging molecules with mass spectrometry (MS)-based detection principle, which is called imaging MS (IMS), has become a great tool. IMS has wide versatility and is increasingly employed for the analysis of biological tissues. To date, IMS provides us a novel opportunity to visualize diverse types of molecules directly on tissue surfaces, from small compounds to high molecular weight biopolymers. In particular, metabolite imaging has been attracting attention because we do not have established imaging techniques for diverse metabolite species. Some groups including us approach the visualization of neurotransmitters in mammalian central nervous system with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI)-IMS.
