The 54th Annual Conference on Mass Spectrometry, Osaka, Japan, 2006
"The Progressive Science of Mass Spectrometry"

The 54th Annual Conference on Mass Spectrometry is held at Senri Life Science Center in Osaka, Japan on 17-19 May 2006. The main theme is the progressive science of mass spectrometry about that Prof. Takekiyo Matsuo and Prof. Klaus Biemann were discussed with me at Kyoto International Conference on Biological Mass Spectrometry in 1992: The m/z, horizontal axis of mass spectrum teaches us the answer of "What is it?" It is important for qualitative analysis. Scientists want to know what it is. The first step of the structure determination is to analyze the molecular weight and Composition. The high resolution mass spectrometer rapidly analyze accurate mass and shows composition number. The intensity of ions, vertical axis teaches us the answer of "How much amounts is it ?" It is important for quantitative analysis. The mass chromatography teaches us the time scale variant of the ion amount. Mass spectrometer is the most splendid analytical instrument. The most important item for the progressive science of mass spectrometry, the mass scientists must think why does it happen. Sometime mass spectrometer shows us unreasonable phenomena that are keys of solving the problem, because mass spectrum is correct and human beings are unreasonable. The mass scientist should observe mass spectra carefully and think why do they happen.
In the preface of the book "Proceeding of the Kyoto '92 International Conference on Biological Mass Spectrometry, Prof. T. Matsuo described that the objective BMS '92 Kyoto is to greatly encourage the younger generation of mass spectrometrists, biochemists, and biologists to actively participate in a international field. The future of the scientific disciplines rests with them. He settled me the chance to discuss with Prof. K. Biemann about the progressive science of mass spectrometry.
It is great pleasure to welcome Prof. Donald F. Hunt, Prof. Franz Hillenkamp, and Prof. Matthias Mann for the plenary lectures. They contribute practically to the progressive science of mass spectrometry. We look forward for the younger generation of mass spectrometrists, biochemists, and biologists to attend the plenary lecture and discuss with Great Professors actively.
The program of Symposium and workshop shows the various areas of application that are today's progressive science of mass spectrometry.
