Comprehensive High‑Resolution Mass Spectrometric Analysis of Ultra-Short to Long Chain PFAS in Environmental Water

Ultra‑short PFAS (C1–C3), such as TFMS, PFEtS, PFPrS, TFA, and PFPrA, are emerging contaminants increasingly used as alternatives to long‑chain PFAS. Their extremely high polarity makes them challenging to retain using conventional LC/MS workflows. This study establishes an analytical method capable of detecting ultra‑short to long‑chain PFAS in environmental water. River water samples were extracted using weak anion‑exchange SPE and analyzed with a mixed‑mode of anion‑exchange/reversed‑phase PFAS column coupled to an Agilent LC–QTOF system. The workflow provided superior retention and high‑resolution MS/MS data, demonstrating its applicability to environmental samples.
