Metabolomes (comprehensive profiles of metabolites) are downstream of the transcriptome and proteome, which are considered media streams in the process of genomic information execution and are considered part of the outcome of genomic information execution.
Metabolic fingerprinting, which quantitatively analyzes downstream macro-phenotypes using metabolomic information as explanatory variables, is a high resolution phenotyping tactic.
In principle, it can be described as an application of chemometrics, in which a multivariate regression model is constructed using comprehensive metabolite profiles as explanatory variables and significant quantitative phenotypes as response variables. Since metabolic fingerprinting also provides some qualitative information, its application is not limited to basic biology, but is actively being developed in the fields of medical, agricultural, and engineering. Furthermore, metabolic fingerprinting is not limited to the living organisms.
By applying this method to foods, it is possible to describe complex food functions, which has been difficult up to now, and various applications can be expected. In this presentation, I will introduce various applications of metabolomics and discuss new applications in the future.
