Volatile compounds emanating from the ecosystem are detected by interacting with olfactory receptors of organisms and play an important role in their survival and reproduction. Those interactions differ in action depending on stereoisomerism of compounds. In this study, we analyzed vanillin and its structural isomers using an atmospheric pressure corona discharge ionization mass spectrometry (APCDI-MS) which can measure atmospheric volatile compounds in real time. In full spectra, the O2- adducts of the isovanillin dimers were specifically observed, which allows isovanillin to be identified distinguishably. In CID spectra, the fragmentation pathway and resulting intensities of product ions were identical for vanillin and isovanillin, whereas o-vanillin represented other fragmentation pattern. It suggested that structural isomers can be distinguished by combining full and CID spectra obtained by APCDI-MS.
