Monoterpenes, one of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are emitted from forests or daily-used chemical products and form secondary organic aerosol (SOA) via their oxidation or oligomerization in the atmosphere. They may act as condensation nuclei for formation of atmospheric particles, which are relevant to the issues of global climate change and air pollution. Monoterpenes have various isomers, which have different potential of SOA formation. Thus, it is important to identify isomers accurately. In order to develop a method to distinguish monoterpene isomers, α-pinene, limonene and myrcene (i.e., bicyclic, monocyclic, and acyclic monoterpenes, respectively) were measured by an atmospheric pressure corona discharge ionization (APCDI) and collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry (CID-MS). Although fragment ions at m/z 81 and 95 were observed predominantly from protonated molecules of all the analytes, the intensity ratio was different between α-pinene/limonene and myrcene. Furthermore, it was found that each protonated molecule is produced from different precursor ions, which is useful to identify the isomers.
