Lipids such as phospholipids, triglycerides, and cholesterols have been garnering attention for their relationship with health and various diseases. On the other hand, lipids are poorly water-soluble and have a wide variety of molecular structures, which makes extraction and analysis from biological samples difficult, and standardization of lipidomics has not yet progressed in Japan and overseas. For this reason, it is difficult to construct a cross-sectional database using previously acquired data, and the comparison and utilization of lipidomics data among facilities have not been successful.
With the adoption of the COCN (Council on Competitiveness-Nippon) as a promotion theme for FY2020, we are recruiting the members who have knowledge, experience, and interest in lipidomics from industry, government, and academia to solve the problem of standardization of lipidomics, and we begun discussions and collaboration.
In this presentation, we will report on the activities and future prospects, and also introduce the importance of standardization in newborn screening, which we are currently working on.
