Analyses of synthetic polymers in MS is effective for characterization of polymerization degree, backbone structure, and end groups. We recently developed the method to analyze the multiply charged (relatively large) synthetic polymers in electrospray ionization-ion mobility spectrometry-(tandem) mass spectrometry (ESI-IMS-MS(/MS)). However, the increase in the molecular weight of polymer decreases the ionization efficiency of the analytes in general. Thus, the identification of the most abundant peak from the isotopic peaks is often difficult due to noise. To solve this problem, we employed a noise-reduction method using Fourier transform filtering. The method was successfully applied to the identification of end groups of polymethylmethacrylates and characterization of co-polymers.
