Negative ions in atmosphere are deeply related to environmental issues. Therefore, it is important to study the formation mechanism of the atmospheric negative ions. However, the elementary processes involved in negative ion formation and evolution are not yet well understood. Here we used an atmospheric pressure corona discharge system that successfully leads to regular and reproducible generation of various atmospheric ions originating from ambient air. In this paper, we focused on the identification of negative ion at m/z 20 that have not yet been identified. It was found that this ion is dominantly formed at high electric field area containing electrons with kinetic energy higher than 10 eV and under high humidity condition. These suggested that the m/z 20 ion originates from radicals and ions formed via reactions between high energetic electrons (≥10eV) and H2O molecule.
