Proteomics studies at NCP

(NCP, KU)
oZarina, Shamshad

Large scale study of complete proteome component expressed by a tissue, organ or a cell is termed as Proteomics. Being indispensible molecules of living organisms, proteins play critical role in maintaining homeostasis. Proteomics not only relates the genotype with phenotype, it also helps in translating genomic information into functional proteins. Proteomics techniques utilize combination of wet lab and dry lab methods to answer various biological questions. Initially, combination of two dimensional gel electrophoresis and Mass spectrometry have been method of choice but later, gel free methods were also developed. Quantitative proteomics is another area gaining much popularity due to better accuracy and sensitivity. National Center for Proteomics is a recently established research institute that is dedicated for proteomics studies. In recent years, our focus has been on identification of therapeutic targets, diagnostic/prognostic biomarkers and computer aided drug designing in diseases like hepatocellular carcinoma, thalassaemia, uremia, diabetes and oral squamous cell carcinoma to name a few. Present communication will provide an overview of our studies on oral carcinoma and thalassaemia using gel based and gel free quantitative proteomics approach.
