One of the biodegradable polyester, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) [P(3HB-co-3HV)], was characterized by combination of an “on-plate degradation” and Kendrick mass defect plot analysis using a MALDI spiral-TOFMS. P(3HB-co-3HV) was supposed to be degraded by NaOH-methanol solution into cyclic oligomer which appropriate to accurate mass analysis using monoisotope peaks. The distribution of the composition of the copolymer was effectively visualized by Kendrick mass defect plot.
