A new tandem time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer applicable to HE-ETD has been designed and is constructed. It consists of an electrospray ion source, an orthogonal acceleration, a MULTUM TOF spectrometer, a collision cell which can be filled with an alkali metal target, and a quadratic-field ion mirror. HE-ETD spectra provide the sequence information of all amino acid residues of doubly protonated vasopressin which has a disulfide linkages in the peptide, while HE-CAD and LE-ETD cannot provide the complete sequence information of the peptide.
