Development of comprehensive analysis of fatty acids using the basic eluent and LC-FTMS

A rapid and comprehensive method for analysis of free fatty acids by liquid chromatography / Fourier transform mass spectrometry is described. Selective detection and clear separation of 66 molecular species of fatty acid standard reagents, including double bond regioisomers, cis-trans isomers and branched isomers were achieved by reversed-phase chromatography using the basic eluent. Our method can detect unknown fatty acids and over 150 molecular species from the fish oil.
