Adenosine is a well-known regulator of renal function, which plays a protective role against ischemic kidney injury; however, the exact distribution of adenosine in the kidney has not been investigated. In this study which utilized matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization - imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS), we revealed prominent adenosine accumulation in the outer stripes of outer medulla where contained higher concentration of ATP. The accumulation rapidly disappeared during acute ischemia. The dynamism of adenosine may contribute to protective effects of adenosine against ischemia.
