We have been developing non-target analytical methods for chemicals in
various environmental samples using by GCxGC-HRTOFMS. As an example,
thousands of organohalogen compounds including hazardous chemicals such as
PCBs and the other POPs were selectively and simultaneously detected and
identified from environmental sample without any purification by several
advanced methods which process exact mass spectral data from GCxGC-HRTOFMS.
By using original software that finds isotopic clusters of chlorine in mass
spectra, we achieved selective extraction of the mass spectra of
organochlorines from the huge amounts of data from environmental samples.
For accurate data extraction, high mass resolution and mass accuracy were
essential. Also, the use of mass defect was very effective in removing the
mass spectra of hydrocarbons.
