Quadrupole ion trap (QIT) is frequently used for amino acid sequencing and structural analysis of organic molecules in mass spectrometry. In particular, multistage tandem mass spectrometry (MSn) is an essential tool because it shows successive degradation pathways in low-energy CID. Since the residence time of ions in QIT (10-1s) is longer than frequency factor for energy randomization (10-14s), unexpected events such as rearrangements and adduct formation take place in the QIT cell. Here we report the formation of hydrated adducts of magnesium compounds A+, [A+nH2O]+ (n=1-3), in the storage ion and CID spectra of precursor A+.
