We have been developing mass spectrometry techniques for safety and security of social infrastructures. These techniques are currently applied to dioxin precursor monitoring1) and PCB monitoring2) in an environmental field, and to explosives trace detection3,4) and illicit drug testing5) in a security field. On-site sensing requires other techniques such as environmental durability and miniaturization for system deployment that have less importance in the conventional usage field of mass spectrometry, off-site in a laboratory. I’ll introduce some examples including high throughput explosive trace detection systems, which we’ve been developing.
