A direct imaging TOF-SIMS was developed for imaging mass spectrometry of soft materials including biological samples in sub-cellular size. This apparatus consists of a direct imaging TOF mass spectrometer which projects the spatial origin of secondary ions onto a 2D ion detector and a gas cluster ion gun which provides a pulsed primary ion beam to irradiate a sample. The spatial resolution of the direct imaging TOF mass spectrometer is independent of the diameter of the primary ion beam. The gas cluster ion gun has been designed to select the size of gas cluster ions. Mass images of test samples including biological substances have been measured to assess performance of the apparatus. The performance of the apparatus and preliminary measurement will be presented.
