Electron ionization (EI) is a very common ionization method for gas chromatography / mass spectrometry (GC/MS). However, EI does not produce the molecular ion very often because the excess energy generates fragment ions in ionization process.
Detection of the molecular ion is very important to confirm mass number of target compound. Therefore, soft ionization method is used to get information of mass number. Photoionization (PI) is well known as very soft ionization method. Because of PI can produce molecular ion. In this study, we measured volatile compounds in polymer by using HS/GC/MS as a practical example of PI. The volatile compounds were generated in the temperature range corresponding to the manufacturing and molding process of polymeric material. We will compare the mass spectra by EI and FI, and we will discuss to usefulness of PI.
