We demonstrate the usefulness of Py-GC x GC/HRTOFMS for selective separation and structural analysis of fluorinated components in polymeric materials. A GC x GC experiment was able to completely separate fluorinated compounds, pyrolysis products of fluorinated polymers, from their hydrocarbon counterparts. Furthermore, the fluorinated compounds were regularly arranged according to their carbon numbers and fluorine contents in the 2D chromatogram. It is concluded that reliable structural analysis of the fluorinated compounds is available by combining the excellent positional information in the two-dimensional gas chromatogram with analysis of the accurate mass spectra obtained by HRTOFMS.
