Curing of photopolymers used for printing inks, paints and coatings proceeds by radical reaction triggered by photoinitiators. Some of the photopolymers are polyurethane acrylates with acryloyl or methacryloyl end groups. Identification of such terminal groups is a key issue with regard to curing mechanism. In this presentation,we report identification of terminal 2-(acryloyloxy)ethoxy group in a high molecular weight polycarbonate-urethane acrylate (Mw greater than 10,000) through MALDI-MS analysis of its methanol-extracted oligomer and hydrolysis product.
