Production characteristics of c-ions in negative ion CID of peptides

ESI-MS has become an important tool for determining the amino acid sequence of peptides and proteins. The ‘mobile proton’ model of protonated peptide fragmentation and the specific cleavage near acidic amino acids have been reported. In contrast, there is little information about the fragmentation patterns of deprotonated peptides. In order to investigate the fragmentation mechanism of deprotonated peptides, especially c-ion formation, low energy collision-induced dissociation (CID) studies were carried out using an electrospray/ion trap mass spectrometer.
