Probe electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (PESI-MS) is ambient ionization mass spectrometry, and therefore has some advantages for the analysis of biological molecules. This system enables us to apply mass spectrometry directly to the living animal, and we have previously demonstrated its usefulness in the diagnosis of steatosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma. In this study, we attempted to extract specific spectral profiles of various organs in mice and to set standards for exploiting this system to the diagnosis of various disorders. While human samples have to be used for diagnosis of human disease, we took advantages of mice, as their homogenous genetic background may be ideal for setting a range of normal fluctuation in physiological state.
