“What determines the threshold size of cation adducted polymer in MS?” This work was started from the fundamental question. To approach for it, we performed Ion-mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) via electrospray ionization (ESI) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation for evaluating spacious size and steric conformation of a cation adducted polymer. According to Rayleigh limit model, which assumes that minimum spherical polymer chain coil with excess charge, yielded very good agreement with literature-known surface tension values. The IM-MS in conjunction with MD simulation enables to solve the above question and evaluate surface tension of synthetic polymer from different type.
