The definitive diagnosis of nephritis or nephrotic syndrome currently requires a renal biopsy, which is an invasive procedure with bleeding risk. Hence, the development of a non-invasive diagnostic method that uses blood or urine samples instead of biopsy is of great clinical value. In this study, urine samples from 274 nephrotic patients were analyzed using capillary electrophoresis-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (CE-TOF-MS). As a result of the metabolomic analysis, 220 metabolite peaks were detected in the urine of nephrotic patients and 127 of those were identified. We further conducted a logistic regression analysis that combines multiple metabolites in order to discriminate from seven types of nephrotic diseases and found that some diseases could be distinguished with high accuracy.
