Trace Structure Analysis by Using Crystalline Sponge Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry (CS-LDI MS)
We have developed crystalline sponge laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (CS-LDI MS) to elucidate molecular structure based on two different analytical approaches, X-ray and MS analysis. Although we observed the ions of encapsulated π-conjugated ene compounds, 11- and 15-membered ring compounds in the CS were not ionized. Single crystal X-ray analysis showed that the presence and absence of the interaction between CS framework and analyte. It indicated that the efficiency of ionization for analyte is critically depended on whether the interaction between CS framework and analyte is present or not. Another feature of CS is structure determination of unknown compounds. The reason is that the elemental composition can often be known from MS. In general, it is difficult to identify atomic species with similar numbers of electrons by X-ray analysis.
