Analytical Method of Mercury Stable Isotope Ratio and Its Application to the Environmental Science

(Univ. Tokyo)
oTakaaki Itai

Mercury (Hg) stable isotope analysis has been developed since 2000s, and now it is widely accepted as the useful environmental tracer. Use of multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer connected with cold vapor Hg introduction system enable us to measure Hg stable isotope ratio in good precision. In this presentation, principle and caution of isotope measurement is firstly introduced, then application of this tool to environmental chemistry field is overviewed through the studies of (i) regional isotope variation of Western North Pacific skipjack tuna, (ii) metabolic isotope fractionation in open sea cetaceans.
