Atmospheric and Oceanic Observations of Volatile Organic Compounds by Proton Transfer Reaction-Mass Spectrometry

Starting in 2004, we have developed, built and used a novel mass spectrometric instrument for measuring a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere and the ocean, following a pioneering work in the development of Proton Transfer Reaction-Mass Spectrometer (PTR-MS) led by Werner Lindinger and his coworkers based at the Institute of Ion Physics, the University of Innsbruck in Austria. At NIES, we have developed our own custom-built PTR-TOF-MS as well as used an Ionicon’s quadrupole PTR-MS in field studies to examine the emissions of VOCs and their role in the formation of ozone and aerosols, including ground-based field campaigns in Japan and China (e.g., Fukue Island, Mt. Tai and Rudong near Shanghai). The work was also extended to shipboard field studies of atmosphere-ocean interactions of VOCs in the Pacific Ocean onboard R/V Hakuho-maru. The measurements in the Pacific Ocean focused on VOCs emitted from biogenic sources, targeting dimethyl sulfide, oxygenated VOCs, and isoprene. We will outline our past and ongoing research activities, show major scientific highlights, and discuss issues and future directions.
