Non-target Analysis of Known Unknowns in Environmental Matrix
Non-target analysis using high-resolution mass spectrometry was applied on environmental samples taken from Hyogo Prefecture. Aquatic samples were passed through solid phase extraction cartridges. Eluted substances were analyzed an X500R time-of-flight mass spectrometer coupled with a liquid chromatograph. SWATH acquisition mode was used to obtain all fragment ion spectra of detectable substances. The majority of substances were tentatively identified. They included natural products as well as anthropogenic substances such as detergents, pharmaceuticals, antioxidants, antibacterial agents, and their transformation products. Compounds detected have a certain environmental source and a finite lifetime in the environment. The knowledge would help understanding of usual status of the environment and complement the current management of chemical substances.
