Structural Characterization of a New Insecticidal Peptide from the Venom of the North African Scorpion, Buthacus leptochelys
Scorpion venom contains various bioactive peptides that show insecticidal, antimicrobial or hemolytic activity. In this study, we isolated a new insecticidal peptide, Bl-1, from the venom of the north African scorpion Buthacus lteptochelys by bioassay-guided RP-HPLC fractionation. Primary structure of Bl-1 was determined by Edman degradation and de novo sequencing analysis. As a result of sequence database search, Bl-1 shares sequence similarity to scorpion α-like toxins, which act on Na+ channels.
