Visualization of Sampling and Ionization Processes in Scanning Probe Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (SPESI-MS)
Tapping-mode scanning probe electrospray ionization (t-SPESI) realizes the mass imaging using a capillary probe. Although the formation of a liquid bridge and an electrospray enables the ambient sampling ionization (ASI), the dynamic behavior of the charged liquid at the probe apex is unclear. In order to study the process of ASI with t-SPESI, we have developed the optical detection method of a probe motion. The time dissolved measurements indicated the formation/breakage of a liquid bridge and the subsequent ionization of sampled molecules. We also analyzed the the mechanical property of the probe by finite element calculation.
