The crystalline sponge (CS) method which was developed to determine the structure of non-crystalline compound by using X-ray crystallographic analysis, was used in combination with laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry. Three cyclic compounds (1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadiene (Cp*H), zerumbone and muscone) were encapsulated in CS and there structures were determined by combining X-ray and MS. As a results, the crystal structure in CS was determined and the molecular ion peak was definitely detected using by this combined method in the case of Cp*H. On the other hand, the molecular ion peak was not detected in zerumbone and muscone, despite being able to analyze the structures in CS. The results show that the macrocyclic compounds seem to be less likely to transfer laser enerty from the framework to the analyte in CS.
