Mass spectrometric study for the frontiers of interfacial science

(NIES)
oShinichi Enami

Many important environmental/biological processes involve reactions at aqueous interfaces. The mechanisms of interfacial reactions are not fully understood, due to the lack of direct methods for in-situ monitoring of short-lived intermediates generated at the interface (depth < 1nm). A new interface-specific mass spectrometry utilizing microjet breakup has been developed and applied to heterogeneous environmental/biological processes. By directly detecting key intermediates including radical species, the reaction mechanisms at aqueous interfaces have been elucidated. In this keynote speech, the origins of interface-specific phenomena and future perspective on the frontiers of interfacial science will be discussed.
