An electrostatic ion storage ring (E-ring) has opened up a new research field to investigate polyatomic molecular ions, cluster ions, and bio-molecular ions taking an advantage of the required storage condition freeing from the mass of the ions. The stored ions travel at the constant velocities from a few keV to a few hundred keV in the ring for a long time (typically several seconds or more) in the high vacuum condition. The circulation period is often used to extract mass-resolved information, and this device is suitable to trace time-resolved dynamics of the stored ions as well as action spectroscopy using tunable UV/VIS/IR lasers.
I will show our result using the TMU E-ring at Tokyo Metropolitan University, i.e., observation of the slow de-excitation dynamics of carbon clusters excited by tunable lasers, leading to find a new cooling process referred to as recurrent fluorescence. Recently the development of the E-ring has moved into the new stage; namely a cryogenic electrostatic ion storage ring. Our group has developed a tabletop cryogenic electrostatic ion storage ring, RICE (RIken Cryogenic Electrostatic ion storage ring). On-going projects using RICE by our group together with other examples planned or tried by overseas groups will be introduced.
