Mammalian steroid hormones are synthesized mainly in adrenal cortex and gonads (testis and ovary) and function as glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and male- or female-hormones. These steroid hormones are synthesized by several cytochrome P450s and hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases. Since the ionization efficiency of steroid hormons is generally low, we tried to improve the ionization methods of steroid hormones mainly for the application to MALDI mass spectrometry. Several derivatization reagents and metal nanoparticles including commercially available- and newly synthesized-materials were useful for the high efficiency detection of steroid hormones. We also applied theses reagents to Imaging Mass Spectrometry of steroid hormones using mainly FT-ICR MS (Bruker: Solarix).
