In this presentation we will discuss the instrumentation development for miniature mass spectrometry (MS) systems and the technologies enabling chemical reactions for biological and biomedical analysis. Ambient ionization methods including paper spray, extraction spray and slug flow extraction electrospray will be presented and the performance of individual method and suitable applications will be discussed. The concept and design of the Mini 12 system of compact size for point-of-care analysis will be described and its performance for clinical diagnosis and other applications will be discussed with a focus on the quantitation through simple operation procedure. The technologies developed to enable chemical reactions will also be discussed, including the reactive extraction for improving the sensitivity of the ambient ionization methods, on-line Patenò-Büchi (P-B) reactions facilitated by UV irradiation to identify the locations of C=C bonds in the lipids, and the new ion-radical reactions studied using a dual-DAPI (discontinuous atmospheric pressure interface) instrument.
