2. Abstract

Abstracts are required for all manuscripts whether written in English or Japanese. The abstract (about 200 words) in English on a separate sheet of paper should be attached to the manuscript. It should describe briefly and objectively the purpose of the research, the principal results, and the major conclusions without quoting any references, tables or figures.

3. Text

Text should include Introduction, Experimental Section, Results and Discussion, Conclusion, in this order. When chemical compounds need to be numbered, use Arabic numbers and underline them with a red, wavy line.

  1. General organization

Indicate the breakdown among and within sections clearly by using the following symbols.

    1, 2, 3,...
Chapters (leave one line between chapters). Change lines to start a new paragraph.

    1.1, 1.2, 1.3,...
Sections. Change lines to start a new paragraph. Indent three to four spaces before the beginning of the first sentence.

    1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3,...
Subsections. Change lines to start a new paragraph.

    (a), (b), (c),...
Headings. Sentence should follow immediately after heading.

  2. Spelling

    American English spelling is preferable.

(examples) color, behavior, center, meter, labled, acknowledgment, analyze, program, sulfur, etc.

  3. Numerals

Use comma every three digits and use. (point) to describe a decimal point.

    (examples) 100,000, 4.5x10-6

  4. Symbols and Units

Decision on the type of printing letter will be made after papers are accepted for publication. Use only internationally acknowledged units and do not add a period (.) at the end of units.

    (examples) s, u, Pa, Torr, m/z

  5. References and Footnotes

References should be indicated with Arabic numbers such as 1), 2) or 6)$B!A(J8) at the upper right hand side of the appropriate words in the text. List all the references at the end of the text. Footnotes should be indicated by asterisks such as *1, *2, *3 and should be placed at the bottom of every page. Use the format given in the following examples.

    (examples) Journals
    1) H. Ezoe and E. Goto, J. Mass Spectrom. Soc. Jpn., 41, 1 (1993).
    2) R. D. Bowen, D. H. Williams, G. Hvistendahl, and J. R. Kalman, Org. Mass Spectrom., 13, 721 (1978).

    (examples) Monographs
    3) H. Ewald and H. Hintenberger, "Methoden und Anwendungen der Massenspektroskopie." Verlag Chemie, Weinheim (1953), p. 52.
    4) J. H. Futrell, D. Smith, and R. Clow, "Advances in Mass Spectrometry," Vol. 5, ed. by A. Quayle, The Institute of Petroleum, London (1971), Chap. 3, p. 237.

Furthermore, we had used Shituryobunseki or Mass Spectrosc. for quotation of this Journal up to volume 40, but now we recommend J. Mass Spectrom. Soc. Jpn. from volume 41.

  6. Equations

Equations in the text should be indicated using the format given in the following examples.

    (examples)

In the case that equations are indicated separately from sentences, follow the examples below.

    (examples)

  7. Keywords (within five words) should be placed after the references.

4. Figures, Structural Formulas, and Tables

  1. Figures and structural formulas should be drawn in black ink on plain paper or tracing paper.

  2. Tables should be typed in order to avoid misprints.

  3. Words in Figures and Tables should be all in English. Letters and symbols should be all in English. Symbols and units should be the same as the ones used in the text.

  4. The size of figures in the final form printed in the Journal will be either A or B.

A: Width is less than 6.5 cm.
B: Width is from 9 to 13 cm.

In either size, height should be less than 18 cm. The standard size for the original figure should be twice the size printed in the final form in the Journal.

  5. Figures, structural formulas, the titles for tables and figure captions should all be in English. The titles for Tables should be typed above the tables. Any captions within the table should be types as footnotes below the table. Figure captions and explanations for structural forms should be typed in separate papers.

  6. Figures and tables should be numbered in consecutive order in Arabic numbers like Fig. 4 or Table 3. Author's name should be written (first initial and last name) with pencil in one of the corners of each page.

  7. Placement for figures, structural formulas and tables should be indicated in the text.

5. Submission of manuscripts

The manuscript should be prepared in the order of (1) submission card, (2) text, (3) references, (4) tables, (5) original drawings, (6) figure captions, (7) floppy disc (for final manuscripts). Two complete copies are required for (2) to (6).

Special notes from editors

  1. Make sure that the submission card is enclosed.

  2. Write affiliation and address at the bottom of the first page and keywords at the end of the text.

  3. Send two copies of manuscript, figures, and drawings besides the original. This applies to revised manuscript, too.
